Baseball Sweeps Paradise Valley in Doubleheader

Runs Hard to Come by in Win Versus Paradise Valley

Both teams were strong on the bump on Friday but the Geckos defeated the Paradise Valley Pumas 1-0. Loria started the game for GateWay and recorded all 21 outs in the seven inning affair. The pitcher gave up three hits and zero runs, striking out five and walking one. The Geckos got on the board in the third inning after Meister doubled, scoring a quick footed LaCelle from first base.
 
Williams began the game for Paradise Valley. The starting pitcher allowed six hits and one run over six innings, striking out three and walking one. Meister went 1-for-3 at the plate and led the team with one run batted in. BartleBarnard, Meister, MaizeMallee, and LaCelle each collected one hit for GateWay.
 

Geckos Defeat Pumas on Multiple Hit Performance by Hubert

Hubert collected four hits in six at bats, as GateWay defeated Paradise Valley 9-6 on Friday, in game two of the doubleheader. Hubert singled in the third inning, singled in the fourth inning, singled in the sixth inning, and singled in the seventh inning. 
 
Paradise Valley opened the scoring in the first after Eusebio singled, scoring one run. LaCelle singled to center field, which helped GateWay tie the game at one in the top of the second. The Geckos took the lead, 4-1, in the top of the third thanks to singles by Hubert and Bartle. The Pumas scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth on a home run to left field by Eusebio.
 
Anguiano earned the win for GateWay. The pitcher gave up four runs (three earned) over five innings, striking out five. Molony opened the game for the Geckos. The opening pitcher allowed four hits and two runs over three innings, striking out two. Hewitt led things off on the hill for Paradise Valley. The pitcher allowed eight hits and seven runs (two earned) over three and two-thirds innings, striking out four and walking three. Hogan collected the last three outs of the game to earn the save.
 
The Geckos accumulated 14 hits in the game. Bartle went 1-for-2 at the plate and led the team with two runs batted in. Barnard, Meister, and Maize each collected multiple hits for GateWay. Lacelle led the Geckos with four walks. Overall, the team had a strong eye at the plate, piling up 11 walks for the game. The Geckos ran wild on the base paths, tallying three stolen bases for the game. They also turned two double plays in the game.
 
GateWay baseball will be back in action on Tuesday, March 10th in a non-conference match up against Monroe Community College at The Gene. First pitch will be at 3pm.
