GateWay Beats Glendale
The GateWay Geckos were victorious against the Glendale Gauchos 7-4 on Tuesday, February 24th. The Geckos got on the board in the top of the first inning after
Hubert singled, and
Breazeale hit a sacrifice fly, each scoring one run. A single by
Barnard extended GateWays lead to 3-0 in the top of the second inning. The Geckos continued to extended their early lead with two runs in the top of the third thanks to RBI singles by
Henry and
Solinsky. GateWay amassed 14 hits in the game. Breazeale provided pop in the middle of the lineup, and led the Geckos with two runs batted in. Hubert led the team with four hits in five at bats. Solinsky, Barnard, and Henry each collected multiple hits as well. Barnard and
Maize combined for four stolen bases in the game.
Fragozo started on the bump for GateWay. The hurler surrendered six hits and four runs (three earned) over seven and two-thirds innings, striking out eight and walking one. Kirby started on the bump for Glendale. The pitcher surrendered eight hits and five runs (three earned) over three innings, striking out three and walking one.
Giddings threw one inning of zero-run ball for the Geckos in relief.
GateWay Geckos Fall to Glendale Gauchos Despite Strong Effort From Maize
Maize collected four hits in six at bats, but GateWay lost to Glendale 15-12 on Wednesday, February 25th. Maize tripled in the fifth inning, singled in the fourth inning, singled in the first inning, and singled in the third inning.
The Gauchos rallied for the victory despite trailing 10-5 in the fifth. They were the first to get on the board in the first when an error scored two runs. Glendale extended their early lead with three runs in the top of the third thanks to RBI doubles by Smith and Duran. GateWay took the lead, 8-5, in the bottom of the fourth thanks to singles by Maize, and Solinsky. Glendale tied the game in the top of the seventh thanks to a sacrifice fly by Smith, a single by Topete, a single by Cooper, and a single by Swanson. The Gauchos captured the lead, 13-10, in the top of the eighth after Malave tripled to right field, Leavitt hit a sacrifice fly, and Cooper doubled to center field, each scoring one run.
Kao started the game for GateWay. The hurler allowed four hits and five runs (three earned) over four innings, striking out four and walking two. Peronace stepped on the bump first for Glendale. The starter allowed eight hits and four runs over three innings, striking out four and walking none. The Geckos amassed 22 hits in the game. Barnard led GateWay with five hits in six at bats. Coggins each collected multiple hits. Maize stole two bases. GateWay turned two double plays in the game.
Two Pitchers Team Up as GateWay Shuts Out Mesa
GateWay defeated Mesa 2-0 on Friday, February 27th as two pitchers combined to throw a shutout. Returner
Ivan Anguiano and freshman Oregon Transfer
Connor Molony each pitched for the Geckos in the game. Anguiano pitched seven innings in relief for GateWay. The pitcher gave up four hits and zero runs while, striking out four and walking three. Anguiano induced a double play to get the last out. Molony started on the bump for the Geckos, giving up zero hits and zero runs over two innings, striking out five and walking one. Hesse started the game for Mesa. He surrendered eight hits and one run over six and two-thirds innings, striking out four and walking two.
A solo home run to left field by Coggins on an 0-2 count put GateWay on the board in the top of the third. The Geckos collected nine hits in the game.
Bartle, Hubert, and Henry each collected two hits in the game. Hubert and Coggins each drove in one run.
Geckos Fall to the Thunderbirds Despite Strong Effort from Bartle
Bartle collected three hits in three at bats, but GateWay lost to Mesa 5-3 on Saturday, February 28th. Bartle singled in the sixth inning, singled in the third inning, and singled in the eighth inning. An error put Mesa on the board in the bottom of the second. Meister hit a sacrifice fly, which helped the Geckos tie the game at one in the top of the third. GateWay took the lead in the top of the fifth when Meister singled, scoring one run, to gain the edge, 2-1. In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Thunderbirds went back into the lead after Mann grounded into a fielder's choice, Aguirre tripled to center field, and Lievsay doubled down the right field line, each scoring one run. Meister led GateWay with two runs batted in. The shortstop went 1-for-4 on the day.
Loria opened the game for GateWay. The starter gave up seven hits and five runs (one earned) over six and two-thirds innings, striking out two and walking two. Angelo opened the game for Mesa. The starting pitcher allowed five hits and three runs over five and one-third innings, striking out four and walking one.
