The GateWay Community College Geckos showcased a mix of early-season grit and high-octane resilience this past Friday, securing a hard-fought series split against Phoenix College. In a doubleheader defined by narrow margins and dramatic shifts in momentum, the Geckos overcame defensive hurdles to finish the day on a high note, punctuated by a thrilling come-from-behind victory in the nightcap.
The opening contest was a defensive struggle that saw the Geckos fall just short in a 5-4 decision. GateWay showed signs of life in the fourth inning, briefly taking a 4-3 lead behind RBI contributions from Austin Mallee and Tanner Solinsky. Matthew Maize was a constant threat on the basepaths, recording a stolen base and scoring twice. However, Phoenix College managed to capitalize on GateWay's defensive miscues, reclaiming the lead in the fifth. Despite a solid starting effort from Ryan Kao, who struck out four over three innings, the Geckos were unable to find the equalizer in the final frames of the seven-inning affair.
The second game of the day appeared to be leaning toward a sweep for Phoenix College, as the hosts jumped out to a commanding 6-1 lead after just three innings. Despite committing seven errors in the contest, the Geckos refused to go quietly. The bullpen, led by Hunter Cowgill and Parker Tromp, provided much-needed stability by shutting down the Phoenix College offense for the final six innings of the game. This defensive stand allowed the bats to wake up, culminating in a massive four-run seventh inning and a go-ahead run in the eighth to seal a 7-6 victory.
The offensive charge in the comeback was led by Matthew Maize, who went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two stolen bases, while Rylen Renton and Max Henry each added multi-hit performances. Hunter Cowgill earned the win for his two scoreless innings of relief, and Bronson Sluiter earned the save with a dominant performance, striking out three over the final two innings to preserve the lead. This resilient split provides the Geckos with plenty of momentum as they continue their 2026 campaign, proving they have the depth and determination to win.
The Geckos next series will be their home opener against Eastern Arizona College on Tuesday, february 3rd. First pitch of the doubleheader will be at 12pm.
